On Tuesday 16th March we celebrated Young Carers Action Day.
We work with many young carers across Mendip & South Somerset; for more information please visit: https://mendipymca.org.uk/what-we-do/family-work/
Some of the young people we work with can be as young as 8 years old. These young people are remarkable, resilient and inspiring.
Here is an extract from a speech from one our senior young carers.
“When I was first asked to write this speech, I’ll be honest I really wanted to expose each and everyone one of you, But I’m feeling nice today. I joined Young carers when I was about 10 or 11 but I’ve been one my whole life. Young Carers has provided a space where I can meet people going through the exact same thing as I am, it allows us to be kids. We don’t often get that chance when we’re working at home, and this allows us to be actual children for once. It’s really weird because when I look at this zoom call, I realise none of you were there when I first joined. But somehow I feel like I’ve known you all for years and I’m closer with you than anyone I was friends with when I first joined. And it’s really nice because I’ve known you all for maybe a year and a half at best, and I can honestly say we’ll be friends for a while.
Sarah you have been my 4th or 5th leader, but I and the others would agree that we connected with you the most. I honestly can’t count how many times you made my mood better with either your ridiculous jokes or words of wisdom. Clara who supports us with her meditation tactics and Siobhan who has the smile of mischief. Thank you for being there and helping us through a bad week or just making us laugh with bingo or other ridiculous (and I mean ridiculous) things Sarah organises
On behalf of the whole group, I want to say thank you to you three for constantly making us smile, and really showing what Young Carers is about, virtual or in person. You’ve make these past few months bearable and it’s been amazing and I look forward to seeing you in person with our UNO tournaments and Greggs”
